Tigers Track And Field Set For Friday's Redhawks Invitational

Memphis' final meet before league championships Feb. 28-29.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After traveling to Nashville for their past two meets, the University of Memphis track and field squads turn their sights north to Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Friday's Redhawks Invitational on the Southeast Missouri campus.
The meet starts at 4 p.m. (CT) with the field events, and the running events begin around 6:30 p.m. (CT).
Friday's Redhawks Invitational is the Tigers' final competition before heading to the 2016 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. This year's annual league meet is scheduled for Feb. 28-29 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.
Last weekend at Vanderbilt University's Music City Challenge, the Tigers had a record and another near-record set.
For the third time this season, junior Martina Rodriguez Sala set a school mark, breaking her own 3000m record she set earlier at the A-State Invitational Jan. 22. At last weekend's Music City Challenge, Rodriguez Sala finished 10th in a program-record 3000m time of 9:34.63, which was over 11 seconds better than her previous 3000m mark of 9:45.42.
Rodriguez Sala also set the program's mile record at the Vanderbilt Invitational Jan. 30. She placed 10th in a school-record time of 4:50.79.
Last weekend's near-record came in the men's 800m by sophomore LaForrest Church, who won the event in a time of 1:49.45. His time, which is the 42nd-best time in the nation, was only .43 seconds off the school record.
The previous week at the Vanderbilt Invitational, Church won the 800m in a time of 1:49.65. He also placed first in the 800m at the Commodore Indoor Opener Dec. 5 and earned American Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week for his performance.
In the men's distance, senior Corentin Louis has paced the Tigers' effort during the indoor campaign. At last weekend's Music City Challenge, Louis ran a personal-best 8:15.50 and placed 10th in the 3000m. Earlier this season, he won the 3000m in a time of 8:33.14 at the A-State Invitational Jan. 22.
Senior Carolina Carmichael leads the talented Memphis pole vault group. Carmichael, a two-time conference Female Field Athlete of the Week honoree, has won three of the four pole vault competitions this indoor season. She was fourth at last weekend's Music City Challenge.
At the Jan. 30 Vanderbilt Invitational, Carmichael broke her own school record in the event. Her first-place vault of 14-0.75 (4.29m) surpassed her previous mark of 13-11.75 which she set last season. Carmichael's 14-0.75 vault is tied for the 14th-best mark in the nation.
