Single-season save record holder, Nolan Blackwood, named to watch list
Memphis junior pitcher Nolan Blackwood has been named to the initial Watch List for the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, the association announced Monday.
Â
Blackwood, who was already named as a preseason second team All-American by the NCBWA, is one of fifteen players on the watch list that recorded double digit saves last season.
Â
The Southaven, Miss. product, set the program record for saves in a single season with 14 last year and finished with a microscopic 0.52 earned run average. He moved to third all-time in school history with 17 career saves and finished with a 2-1 record in 34.2 innings of work over 25 appearances.
Â
Blackwood allowed only two runs during the season and opponents batted just .225 against him. He didn't allow a run in his first 13 appearances of the season.
Â
Memphis will open the season against Tennessee at the home of the Minnesota Twins Double-A affiliate Chattanooga Lookouts. The Tigers and Volunteers will square off in the series opener Friday at 5 p.m. at AT&T Field. The teams will continue the series Saturday at noon and conclude the weekend Sunday at noon.
