Tigers to host two SEC teams during five-game spring season
The University of Memphis will play a five-game spring schedule highlighted by matchups with two Southeastern Conference opponents, head coach Brooks Monaghan announced.
"To be able to play the spring games is always extremely important. We take a little bit of a different approach in regards to the amount of playing time," Monaghan said. "The spring is a great time for some that didn't play a lot of minutes in the fall to get ample opportunity on the field. Our approach in the spring is more geared toward individual improvement."
UT Martin will be the Tigers' first opponent of the spring, with the match set for March 23 at 5:30 p.m. on the Memphis Park Avenue Campus. The Tigers and Skyhawks played during the fall and Memphis picked up a 1-0 shutout win.
The following Wednesday, March 30, Memphis will host Ole Miss at Mike Rose Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. The Rebels managed to beat the Tigers in overtime at Mike Rose in September. Marie Levasseur scored the opening goal in that match before Ole Miss rallied.
Memphis will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to face UAB on April 3 for the only road match of the spring slate. The Tigers were 1-0 winners over the Blazers last season.
On April 9 the Vanderbilt Commodores will visit the Park Avenue Campus for a noon kickoff. Memphis and Vandy played every season from 2011-14 but did not play last year.
The final spring match will be against Southeast Missouri at the Park Avenue Campus on April 17 at 4 p.m. The two teams met in a preseason scrimmage in Cape Girardeau, Mo. last fall and Memphis won 2-0.
