Tigers Fall To Rebels On The Hardwood Saturday
Dec 03, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Memphis' second-half rally comes up short.
OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Memphis men's basketball team made a gallant second-half effort, but the Tigers were unable to overcome serious foul trouble in an 85-77 non-conference setback to Ole Miss Saturday.
The game was Memphis' first road game of the 2016-17 campaign. It also was the Tigers' first visit to the Rebels' new basketball facility, The Pavilion at Ole Miss. Memphis last played the Rebels in Oxford in the 2010 postseason, and that game was held at Tad Smith Coliseum.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 6-2. Memphis now takes the week off from competition for final exams before returning to action Dec. 10 with a home game versus UAB at FedExForum. Game time for the Tigers-Blazers contest is 12 p.m. (CT). Ole Miss improved its record to 6-2.
Saturday's game was marred by a total of 49 called fouls and 62 free throw attempts. A combined 10 players collected three or more fouls, with four of Memphis' five starters having four fouls. Dedric and K.J. Lawson, the Tigers' top-two leading scorers, battled the foul bug all game long.
K.J. led three Tigers in double figures with 17 points. Markel Crawford added a career-high tying 16 points and Jeremiah Martin also tied a career-best with 14 points. Dedric, who played only 22 minutes as a result of fouls, had eight points. It is the first time this season Dedric did not score in double figures and only the eighth time in his career. Dedric's eight points broke a string of 19-straight double-figure scoring games for the sophomore, dating back to early February of last season.
Dedric shared team-high rebounding honors with Crawford, as each had six boards. Martin had five assists, and Dedric blocked three shots. Memphis, which entered Saturday's game with a near 67 percentage of assists on made baskets this season, dished out 17 assists on 26 of its made hoops versus the Rebels.
The second half was one of spurts, and the Rebels made the final one to seal the victory.
After taking a 47-37 halftime lead, Ole Miss quickly extended the lead to 52-38 in the first three minutes of the second half. That's when Memphis made its push.
Over the next 6:14 – and with Dedric sitting on the bench with three fouls for most of the time – the Tigers went on a 20-5 run to take its first lead of the contest at 58-57 with 10:45 left. K.J. hit two treys to ignite the run, and a Crawford steal-and-dunk gave Memphis its first lead at 58-57.
The Tigers continued their push (24-5 run) and extended their lead to 62-57 with 10:01 remaining. The two Mid-South rivals traded points over the next 3:15, and Memphis still held a 68-65 advantage with 6:46 on the clock. But, at that point, Ole Miss made its run – the final one of the second half – to secure the win.
The Rebels closed the game with a 20-9 spurt for the 85-77 win. Three Sebastian Saiz free throws knotted the contest at 68-all, and Ole Miss took off from there. The Rebels went on a 13-1 run to grab an 81-69 advantage and put the contest out of reach.
The foul-fest began in the first half with 21 called fouls and a combined 21 free throws. The Tigers seemed to get the bad end of the foul situation in the first half with both Lawsons picking up two fouls. As a result of the foul trouble, Dedric played only 12 minutes and K.J. 14 minutes in the opening half. The tandem combined for only 12 points (K.J., 10 points; Dedric, 2) before intermission. Ole Miss had only one starter with two fouls by halftime.
Ole Miss led the entire first half, and the Tigers tied the score once at 3-all 1:33 into the contest. The Rebels held a 12-11 advantage at 14:57 mark and used a 6-0 mini-run to push their lead out to seven at 18-11. In that run, Dedric picked up his first foul.
The Rebels continued to hold the Tigers at arm's length midway through the first half and held a 27-19 advantage at the 10:01 mark. But, that's when Memphis made a run of its own. Two K.J. baskets and a Crawford three-pointer cut the Ole Miss lead to 27-26 with 8:15 left before halftime.
But, just after closing to within one, Dedric was whistled for his second foul of the first half and went to the bench. The Rebels took advantage. Ole Miss put together a 10-0 run over the next 3:13 to take a 37-26 lead with 3:02 on the clock. The Rebels led 47-37 at the half.
Memphis shot 42.6 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from the arc. The Rebels hit 43.1 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from the three-point line.
Another difference in the contest was at the free throw line. Both teams shot nearly the same number of free throws, but the Rebels took advantage of their time at the charity stripe. Ole Miss hit nearly 85 percent from the free throw line (28-of-33), while the Tigers hit only 65.5 percent from the foul line (19-of-29).
