Taylor Barnes Named American Rookie of the Week
Dec 26, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Barnes scored a career-high 21 points in the win over Nicholls State last Wednesday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis freshman guard Taylor Barnes has been named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week this week after a stellar performance against Nicholls State on Dec. 21. This is the first conference honor for Barnes and the first Player of the Week mention for the Tigers this season.
Â
Against the Colonels, Barnes scored a career-high 21 points along with pulling down six rebounds and registering four assists. For the game, Barnes went 13-for-15 from the free throw line including 7-for-8 in the 48 seconds of play to help lead the Tigers to the victory. The 13 made free throws is the second most made in a game by a freshman in Memphis history (14) and is three shy of the all-time Memphis mark of 16 made in a game by Victoria Crawford against Western Kentucky back in 2004.
Â
Also this past week, Barnes was responsible for six points and a career-high five assists in the win over Louisiana Tech. Barnes leads the team this season with 34 assists and 20 steals. The Memphis native has started in 11 of the 12 games played this season.
Â
The two wins this past week has put Memphis on a three-game winning streak and 6-6 overall with one more non-conference game to play.
Â
Memphis is back in action on Dec. 28 against Vanderbilt for a game televised on ESPNU. Tip-off against the Commodores at Elma Roane Fieldhouse is slated for 4:00 p.m. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow us on Twitter at @MemphisWBB.
