Memphis all-time leading scorer recognized for academic achievement
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Valerie Sanderson has been named to the 2016 NSCAA Senior College Women's Scholar All-America team, the National Soccer Coaches Association of American announced Thursday.
"This is a fantastic achievement for Valerie and also for our program," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "She represents what a true student-athlete should be all about. She has been tremendous in the classroom and her statistics speak for themselves. What Valerie has accomplished through her career is a coach's dream, to have a player that takes her studies seriously and gets it done on the field."
Sanderson, who was a second-team honoree, has a 3.30 cumulative grade point average as a Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Memphis. The Boisbriand, Quebec native, is expected to graduate next spring.
Sanderson, a four-time all-conference player, became the Tigers' all-time leading goal-scorer this season with 52 goals. She also holds the program's career record with 122 points. She had 16 career game-winning goals and also holds the program record with 12 multiple-goal matches.
This season she scored 16 goals and finished with 39 points, which were both the most by a senior in school history. Sanderson is just the second four-time all-conference player in Memphis history after Vendula Strnadova was first team from 2007-10.
