Men's Basketball Signs Jamal Johnson to NLI

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis men's basketball coach Tubby Smith has announced the signing of Birmingham, Alabama native Jamal Johnson to a National Letter of Intent (NLI).
Johnson is ranked No. 111 by Rivals.com, No. 151 by 247sports, and is the No. 8 combo guard in the country as rated by 247 sports.
Known as an athletic combo guard with a high basketball IQ, the 6-4, 170-pound Johnson averaged 18.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game as a junior for Spain Park High School, and helped the squad reach the Alabama Class 7A state semifinals.
He was named Second Team All-State after his junior season. He was also named an Alabama Boys Basketball North All-Star, after earning All-Academic Team, All-Area Team, and All-Metro team honors.
During his sophomore season he was named the Superior Plumbing Most Valuable Player, at the WellStar Lake City Classic. A year later at the Tournament of Champions from November 22-26, he was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 21 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game in the tournament, as Spain Park went 2-1 in the strong field.
Johnson is the son of seven-year NBA veteran Buck Johnson. He played his summer basketball with Atlanta Xpress in the Under Armour Association before teaming with Team Carroll in the Adidas Gauntlet Circuit.
