Nov 07, 2016 | Football
Second honor this season for each player.
MEMPHIS – Junior quarterback Riley Ferguson and senior place-kicker Jake Elliott each earned his second American Athletic Conference player of the week honor on Monday. Ferguson was named the league' s offensive player of the week after going 20-for-27 for 287 yards and four touchdowns , while Elliott was named the special teams player of the week after hitting field goals from 43, 44 and 31 yards and going 6-for-6 on PATs.
This is the second career weekly honor for Ferguson and the ninth career weekly honor for Elliott.
Ferguson was named the CollegeSportsMadness.com offensive player of the week for the league on Sunday. On the season, he has already passed for 21 touchdowns, which ranks tied for fourth in the Memphis single season record book. His 2,565 career passing yards already ranks 12th in the Memphis career charts, needing just 81 more yards to break in to the career top 10 at Memphis in his first season in the blue and gray.
This is the ninth career honor for Elliott, who also named a Lou Groza semifinalist for the third time in his career last week. Elliott connected on three-of-three field goal attempts in the road win at SMU and pushed past the 400 career point barrier. Elliott now has 406 career points, including the 6-for-6 PATs from last week. For his career, he has made every PAT attempt (184-of-184) and of his 10 kickoffs on Saturday, only three were returned, with seven going for touchbacks and travelling an average 64.2 yards.
Memphis plays at home again on Saturday, facing a 7-2 USF team that is half a game behind Temple for the lead in the East Division of the American Athletic Conference. USF, coming off a bye week last week, has won four of their last five games, with a 46-30 road loss at Temple serving as the only bump in the schedule for the Bulls. In the Bulls' last outing, USF jumped out to a quick lead on Navy and held on for a 52-45 victory over the then-No. 22 ranked Midshipmen.
Tickets are available at www.GoTigersGoTix.com. The USF game, which is Memphis' Military and First Responders Appreciation game, is also the inaugural Reading Challenge game for the Tiger football team. Memphis and Shelby County elementary school students who have earned a 'B' average or higher on their report card can receive up to three complimentary tickets to the game. Questions about the youth program can be directed to the Tiger Football Office at 901-678-5119 or by email at tigers@memphis.edu. The deadline to register for the youth program is Wednesday.
