Memphis enters match with 11-2 record versus ranked foes this season.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Name a coach who hasn't said this: "To be the best, you have to play the best." There aren't many that haven't said, or at the least, thought it.
The University of Memphis rifle team gets the opportunity to compete against the best Saturday, Nov. 5 when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va., to face No. 1 West Virginia. Match time is 7 a.m. (CT).
"They are the No. 1 team in the nation and provide a huge challenge," said head coach Butch Woolbright. "I want our squad to shoot and compete better than we did last weekend. I want them to push themselves every time out to be at their best. The team is excited about the opportunity Saturday."
The Tigers are ranked No. 14 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll. Saturday's match is a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) encounter.
So far this season, Memphis has performed well against nationally-ranked opposition. The Tigers have an 11-2 record against opponents ranked in the CRCA poll. Included in those 10 victories are road wins at No. 13 Army and No. 15 Navy in mid-October.
In addition, Memphis has a 5-0 mark against Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foes, including road wins at Navy and Army. The other three GARC wins were over No. 18 Akron and No. 11 Ole Miss twice.
In their last action Oct. 29, the Tigers posted a 4637-4607 win over No. 19 UT Martin. For a second-straight match, freshman Levi Clark placed first in aggregate score in the Tigers' victory over UT Martin. He also posted the top aggregate score in the Oct. 10 win at Army.
Seniors Amy Fister and Jack Berhorst also have shot well recently. Fister has been in Memphis' top-two in aggregate score in two of the last three matches. Berhorst, who had career bests in both smallbore and aggregate earlier this season, recorded the Tigers' third-highest aggregate score against UT Martin.
The Tigers, though, are facing their toughest challenge of the season to date on Saturday. West Virginia, led by 2016 Olympic gold medalist Ginny Thrasher, has consistently posted team aggregate scores of over 4700. The Mountaineers have won their four matches by an average margin of victory of +56.5 points.
West Virginia is 2-0 in GARC matches this season, having wins over N.C. State and Akron.
