Squad shot second-best aggregate score of the season.
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – University of Memphis' Haylea Broughton, Amy Fister and Levi Clark all posted top-10 aggregate finishes to help lead the Tigers rifle squad to a second-place performance at the Gamecock Invitational Sunday. The results became official Tuesday.
Jacksonville State served as the invitational's host.
After its subpar score at the Nov. 12 Buckeye Open, the Tigers bounced back in a big way at Sunday's Gamecock Invitational. Memphis posted its second-highest aggregate score of the season with a 4667, second only to its 4669 score in the Oct. 9 win at Navy. The Tigers 2317 score in smallbore was a season high, and their 2350 air rifle score was the second-highest mark in that discipline this season.
Memphis, ranked No. 13 in last week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, placed second behind No. 2 Murray State. The Racers were first in both disciplines and aggregate score. The Tigers placed ahead of No. 15 Jacksonville State, No. 20 North Georgia and UAB.
With their second-place finish, the Tigers now have a 13-8 record against opponents ranked in the CRCA poll. Included in those 13 victories are road wins at No. 7 Army and No. 16 Navy in mid-October and wins over No. 14 Akron and No. 11 Ole Miss twice.
Broughton recorded the Tigers' highest aggregate score with a 1170 and placed sixth overall. Fister finished seventh with a 1169, and Clark eighth with a 1165.
Broughton's 1170 aggregate and 579 smallbore scores both were season bests. She placed eighth in smallbore and sixth in air rifle at Sunday's Gamecock Invitational.
Fister was the squad's top shooter in smallbore, placing sixth with a 584. Clark also posted a top-10 smallbore performance, coming in ninth with a 579. Clark was 11th (586) and Fister 13th (585) in air rifle.  Â
Sophomore Leighton Dempster shot Memphis' second-best air rifle score with a 588. Her 588 air rifle score was her second-best mark in that discipline this season.
The Gamecock Invitational wrapped up the Tigers' fall portion of their 2016-17 schedule. Memphis resumes action in mid-January with neutral-site match versus Kentucky in Oxford, Miss.
