Sophomore posted a career-high 31 digs in win at Tulsa.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis sophomore Mady Ruhlman has been named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
It is Ruhlman's first Player of the Week recognition and the second weekly accolade of her career. She was named to the conference's weekly honor roll as a freshman in 2015 (Oct. 26, 2015).
The 5-foot-5 libero collected 45 total kills in helping lead the Tigers to a 1-1 record this past weekend. In a Nov. 18 road match at Tulsa, Memphis defeated the Golden Hurricane 3-2 in come-from-behind fashion. The Tigers fell to league leader SMU 3-0 Nov. 20.
Ruhlman had a career match in the marathon 3-2 win at Tulsa. She recorded a career-best 31 digs in the victory. The 31 digs shattered her previous high of 24 digs against Houston in the 2015 campaign (Oct. 16, 2015). Ruhlman had a team-best 14 digs in the setback at SMU.
The North Branch, Mich., native's 31-digs performance was her sixth 20-plus digs match of the season and the ninth of her career. With her 14 digs at SMU Nov. 20, Ruhlman now has 15-straight matches with double-digit digs in 2016.
Ruhlman leads Memphis with 380 digs this season and also is ranked ninth among the American Athletic Conference leaders in that statistical category. Her 380 digs are just outside the top-10 for digs in a season in Tigers program history (No. 10 is 420 digs).
It is the fifth time this campaign a Tigers player has earned conference weekly distinction. The four previous recognized Tigers were named to the league's weekly honor roll. Michaella Moss garnered weekly honor roll accolades Sept. 5 and Nov. 7, Summer Morgan Oct. 17 and Catlin Lilly Oct. 24.
Memphis wraps up its 2016 season this weekend with back-to-back home matches at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers host Cincinnati Friday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. (CT) and then face East Carolina Saturday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. (CT).
