Elliott named one of 20 semifinalists for third time in his career.
MEMPHIS – Senior place-kicker Jake Elliott has been named one of 20 semifinalists for the 2016 Lou Groza Award, it was announced Thursday. This is the third time that Elliott has been named a semifinalist for the award.
In the Tigers' last game, Elliott converted his 71st career field goal, becoming the Tigers' all-time leader in that category, surpassing the record held by current New England Patriot Stephen Gostkowski. Elliott also passed Gostkowski and Pittsburgh Steelers' running back DeAngelo Williams to become Memphis' all-time leading scorer earlier this season in a win over Temple and has now scored 391 points in the blue and gray.
A number of those points have come on PATs. Elliott holds the current NCAA FBS consecutive PATs made mark with a perfect 178-for-178 on PAT attempts over his four-year Memphis career. Already this season, he has gone 11-for-14 in field goals with two makes from 50 yards or further and eight-of-nine for attempts at 40 yards or more.
Elliott has also been a force on kickoffs for Memphis. Of his 55 kickoffs so far this season, just 15 have been returned. His kickoffs have travelled an average of 63.7 yards with 38 touchbacks and just two kicks out of bounds, including one in 35 mph wind gusts at Navy two weeks ago.
A senior marketing management major, Elliott was named a Walter Camp second team All-American after last season and is the two-time, defending American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year. He is also a three-time, first-team all-conference place-kicker and captured his eighth career Player of the Week award from The American earlier this season after going three-for-three on field goals, including a 50-yarder, and successfully launching an on-side kick, in the win over Tulane.
Memphis continues its conference slate against West Division foes on Saturday, playing at SMU, at 3 p.m. (CT), Saturday. That game will air on ESPNews.
