Tigers Volleyball On Final Road Trip Of Season
Nov 17, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Memphis to play at Tulsa, at SMU this weekend.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Repeat performances – well, almost.
That's what the University of Memphis volleyball squad is looking for, and maybe a little more, this weekend when it faces Tulsa and SMU on the road. Last time, the Tigers split their earlier meetings with the Mustangs and Golden Hurricane. Memphis is hoping to pick up two wins on this trip.
Memphis plays at Tulsa Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. (CT) and then moves on to SMU for a Sunday, Nov. 20 match at 1 p.m. (CT). The road swing is the final one for the Tigers in 2016.
In mid-October of this season, the Tigers needed a spark in their conference schedule after a few tough setbacks to league foes. Enter SMU and Tulsa to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
At that time, the Mustangs brought a 5-1 league record into the match and sat atop the conference standings. Tulsa came into that weekend on a four-match skid, but had dropped several narrow decisions.
Memphis played SMU first and took the Mustangs to the limit in a 3-0 SMU win. Despite the loss, head coach April Jauregui saw some fire in squad.
"I'm pleased with how we battled tonight," said Jauregui following that Oct. 14 match. "And, if we have this effort every match the rest of the season, we'll make some runs at some teams."
Indeed, her Tigers have shown that effort the rest of the campaign, and it started with an impressive 3-1 victory over Tulsa Oct. 16. Memphis jumped out to a 2-0 lead and eventually claimed the win.
"We're happy with how we played today," said Jauregui after the Oct. 16 Tulsa win. "It's nice to get a win, and I know what this team is capable of.
"Our seniors stepped up. When they (seniors) bring that leadership to the court, everyone plays more relaxed. It was a great team effort."
That win began a stretch of four-straight home victories for the Tigers that also included wins over Houston 3-0, Tulane 3-2 and USF 3-2.
Jauregui realizes that, like last time the Tigers played SMU and Tulsa, both matches provide both opportunities and challenges.
"I've said many times, there are no easy matches in our conference," Jauregui said. "SMU is very good and is still in first place in the league standings. They are on a roll of late with four-straight wins. SMU has a lot of weapons. Tulsa also has been playing well lately with five wins in its last seven matches."
