Lady Tigers add Florida signee for next season.
MEMPHIS – Julia Matzat (Parkland, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy HS) has signed an NLI with the University of Memphis to play women's golf starting in the fall of 2017 it was announced by Memphis Head Coach Beth Harrelson, Wednesday.
Matzat helped Archbishop McCarthy to back-to-back FHSAA Class 2A state tournament championships. As a junior, she helped the Mavericks come back from 10-strokes down to win in a one-hole playoff against the defending state champs, American Heritage Plantation. Just 12 days ago, she helped her team defend that first program state championship with an 11-stroke victory, finishing fifth individually with a 151 (76-75).
Matzat was also a runner-up in the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur Championship in Fort Lauderdale this summer. That match-play tournament included a win over LSU junior Carly Ray Goldstein.
A Sun-Sentinel All-County first team honoree, the 5'5" Matzat is currently ranked No. 258 in the Golfweek Junior girls rankings and number 157 in the Polo/AJGA rankings. Matzat has five top 15 finishes on the AJCA circuit in 2016, including a runner up finish at the Daniel Berger Junior Championship in June and a third place finish at the AJCA Junior at The Legends in August.
Matzat, who was coached at Archbishop McCarthy by Carl Phillips, also helped the Mavericks to a fourth-place finish at the Antigua National High School Invitational at McCormick Ranch Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Matzat was the team's highest finisher at the invitation-only tournament, tying for sixth with a 151 (73-78).
This is the second straight season Memphis has inked a women's golfer out of Florida. Matzat follows Abby Herrmann from Pensacola/Catholic HS. Herrmann is currently a freshman on the Memphis roster.
