Tigers Rifle Shoots In Buckeye Open Last Weekend

Fister, Broughton lead the Memphis performance.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – University of Memphis senior Amy Fister and junior Haylea Broughton paced the Tigers' effort at the the fourth-annual Dr. John C. Fellingham Buckeye Open last weekend. Memphis placed fifth in the highly-competitive event that featured all teams ranked in the most recent Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll.
Memphis shot an aggregate team score of 4632 (2292-2340). The Tigers placed fourth in smallbore with their 2292 score. Murray State, ranked No. 3 in the nation, won the Buckeye Open with a 4713 aggregate score. Host Ohio State (#6) was second, followed by No. 11 Nevada and No. 9 N.C. State.
The event also served as a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) dual match with N.C. State, and the Wolfpack took a 10-point win, 4642-4632.
Memphis, ranked No. 12 in the CRCA poll, now sports an 11-7 record against ranked opponents in 2016-17. The Tigers also have a 5-2 GARC record.
Fister was the squad's top shooter and placed fourth overall in smallbore. She shot a 583, her third-best mark in the 2016-17 campaign. Fister was 25th in air rifle with a 583 and compiled an aggregate score of 1166. Her 1166 aggregate score is tied for her third-highest of the season.
Broughton was Memphis' second-highest shooter in both disciplines. She placed 20th in both smallbore (572) and air rifle (586). Broughton's 572 in smallbore is tied for her second-best score of the season. She posted an aggregate score of 1158.
Sophomore Leighton Dempster had the team's best air rifle result with a 587. She was 19th in the discipline. Her 587 air rifle mark is tied for her second-best score in the discipline this season.
Freshman Amberlie Ezell recorded two season-bests at the Buckeye Open. Ezell shot a 569 in smallbore and posted an aggregate score of 1142. Her previous highs were 567 in smallbore and a 1141 aggregate score, both coming in the Oct. 29 win over UT Martin.
The Tigers return to action this Sunday, Nov. 20 when they travel to Jacksonville, Ala., to shoot in the annual Gamecock Invitational.
