MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Zach Mettetal, an infielder for St. Charles North High School in Illinois, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the University of Memphis baseball squad for the 2018 season, head coach Daron Schoenrock announced Thursday.
"Zach's toughness and competitive nature immediately caught our eye early in the recruiting process and he brings a high level of intensity into all he does. He will be another future Tiger baseball player who has excelled both as a middle infielder and as a high school quarterback. Zach will be a great addition to our infield in 2018," Schoenrock said.
The first freshman to start on the varsity baseball at St. Charles North High School, Mettetal is an all-conference and all-area shortstop. He helped lead the North Stars to a third-place finish in the state in 2016. Last season he had a team-high 32 RBI and batted .356 with a .458 slugging percentage and 11 extra-base hits. Mettetal is also an all-conference and all-area quarterback for the North Stars' football team. Mettetal continues a recent Memphis pipeline into the state of Illinois and will be one of seven Tigers from Illinois on the 2018 roster.
Mettetal is the son of Kerri and Dave Mettetal. His twin brother Tyler Mettetal is headed to South Carolina to play baseball.
