Peniston Named American Men’s Tennis Player of the Month
Nov 01, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Junior went 9-2 during the month of October to earn league honors.
MEMPHIS – Junior men's tennis player Ryan Peniston was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Month, Tuesday. Peniston, who was an all-conference honoree last year as a sophomore, went 9-2 in the month of October, picking up two wins over ranked opponents.
Peniston captured the second Ohio Valley Regional singles championship title in program history last week, earning a berth in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships that start Thursday. That tournament will be played at the same facility that hosts the US Open each August.
"I was pretty pumped to win," Peniston said. "(In the Ohio Valley final), I was really nervous, but I could sense he was nervous too, so I just played a little bit and coach said I played the best set he's seen me play, but I'm not sure, I was just trying to be solid and it worked."
"I've been thinking about it (going to New York) since I've won it really," Peniston said. "Ever since freshmen year when (Andrew) Watson won it, I've been wanting to win it. It's been there in the back of my mind, so I'm pretty excited to go."
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships begin Thursday in Flushing, N.Y. Complete tournament information, including live video (subscription-based) and live scoring (free) are available here: https://goo.gl/nIHtra.
