Memphis to get rare opportunity in fall schedule
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team will host an MLB International Academy team for a fall scrimmage at FedExPark on Monday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m.
The international roster has been hand selected by MLB International Staff after the players took part in the MLB European Elite Camp, the premier showcasing event of the year on the continent.
This is the first year in which a full global team has travelled to play games in the United States. The current roster has 12 different countries represented.
The goal for the Elite Camps is to get these players the opportunity to further their baseball careers, whether that be in college or professional baseball.
Memphis has six seniors, Andy Bowman, Chris Carrier, Ryan Garner, Brandon Grudzielanek, Zach Schritenthal and Trent Turner. Carrier and Schritenthal are going into their fourth season as members of the Tigers baseball program.
Carrier, an outfielder, has a career batting average of .261 in 115 games played with 65 RBI and 67 runs scored. The Tigers' primary third baseman since 2014, Schritenthal has a .264 career batting average in 154 games played with 64 RBI and 78 runs scored.
The roster will also consist of nine juniors, including returning starting pitchers Connor Alexander and Colton Hathcock. Three of the juniors are transfers from junior college – Taylor Bobo, Kyle O'Keefe and Tyler Webb – and Brett Harrison joins the Tigers from North Dakota.
Memphis also returns eight sophomores who earned significant playing time as freshmen last season. 10 true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen will make up the remainder of the roster.
The Tigers will continue their fall schedule for the net several weeks, culminating with the annual Garibaldi's Series that concludes in mid-November.
