Tigers Pick up Three Wins on Day One of Bayliss Invitational

Patzanovsky picks up wins in singles and doubles.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis men's tennis team picked up three wins on day one at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational at Notre Dame, Friday. Sophomore Chris Patzanovsky and junior Shakeel Manji each grabbed singles wins to move on in the 1-0 side of their respective flights, while Patzanovsky teamed with freshman Jan Pallares for an 8-1 win in doubles.
The morning started with two rounds of doubles. Patzanovsky and Pallares faced the duo of Matt Gamble and Guillermo Cabrera of host Notre Dame, and made quick work of the match, 8-1. But that was the lone doubles win of the morning in four match-ups for the Tigers. Patzanovsky then teamed with Turner Voges and suffered an 8-3 setback to Indiana's Piekarsky and Ahmadi, while Pallares teamed with Manji and fell 8-5 to Wisconsin's Osgar O'Hoisin and Daniel Soyfer.
In singles play, Patzanovsky downed Marquette's Nick Dykema, 6-3, 6-2 in the Rockne Flight, while Pallares suffered 6-0, 6-1 loss to Michigan's Jathan Malik. In the Parseghian Flight, Manji downed Louisville's Brandon Lancaster, 7-5, 6-1, while Voges battled Marquette's Mackenzie Stearns, but fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Saturday's schedule will include more singles play, starting at 9 a.m. Patznovsky will face Michigan's Myles Schalet, while Pallares faces Cabrera from Notre Dame. Manji will also face a host school opponent, facing Drew Dawson, while Voges will square off against Marquette's Romanello.
