Women’s soccer to host ECU and Cincinnati
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – By the time that Memphis hosts East Carolina on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex, it will have been 20 days since the Tigers last played on their home field. Memphis (7-3-1, 1-1 AAC) has played three consecutive road matches, but an 11-day layoff between games has made it a long stretch between home games.
"There is a reason you have an advantage on your home field. You are in your comfort zone. It has been a while since we have been able to play on our home pitch and we are really looking forward to being back," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We have been successful at home this year. The kids are used to the environment and I know they are excited to be back."
Memphis and Oklahoma State played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in the Tigers' last home match, on Sept. 16.
The Tigers opened American Athletic Conference play on the road last week, beating Temple, before falling to No. 21 UConn. Freshman midfielder Jessica Lisi scored both of the goals during the weekend.
East Carolina is 4-6 this season and 0-1 in league play after losing to Cincinnati last week. The Pirates have had the Tigers' number recently, winning the last two meetings. Senior forward Lana Spitler leads the Pirates with six goals and 13 points.
"Every game is a must win. In this league I don't think anyone is going to run the table. Our goal is to win the conference but to do that you have to get results when you are at home for sure. East Carolina has gotten the best of us the last two times we've played. It is going to be a tough game and we have to be firing on all cylinders," Monaghan said.
Memphis then hosts Cincinnati Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Bearcats are 8-2-1 and opened league play with a win at ECU. Junior forward Julie Gavorski is the team's leading scorer with five goals and 11 points, and the Bearcats share the wealth with 10 different players scoring a goal this season.
"Cincinnati is another tough team. They play with their heart on their sleeve. They are an extremely passionate team and they are tough to play against. You can't come out on your heals because they will punish you," said Monaghan.
The Tigers will complete the home-stand against Tulsa on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. before heading back on the road to face SMU, Oct 20 at 7 p.m. and Houston, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
