Oct 05, 2016 | Women's Cross Country
Tigers up two spots to No. 9 in the South Region Poll.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the third week in a row, the University of Memphis women's cross country team is listed in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCA)/NCAA Division I regional rankings. And, for the second-consecutive week, the Tigers make a move up in the poll.
The regional rankings were released Wednesday.
This week, the Tigers climbed two spots to No. 9 in the USTFCCA/NCAA Division I South Region poll.
Two weeks ago, the 2016 women's squad made school history when it earned the program's first regional ranking. Memphis entered the USTFCCCA South Region poll at No. 12. Last week, the Tigers were No. 11 in the poll.
Memphis is the only American Athletic Conference school ranked in this week's USTFCCCA/NCAA Division I South Region poll. In all, the Tigers are one of five American Athletic Conference women's cross country teams ranked in the regional polls. Of those five American Athletic Conference schools, Memphis made the biggest jump in this week's regional polls.
USTFCCCA has nine different regions and ranks the top-15 programs in each region weekly.
The Tigers posted their fourth top-15 finish of 2016 last Saturday, placing 14th at the prestigious Greater Louisviile Classic. Senior Martina Rodriguez Sala crossed the finish line as the race's runner-up out of 368 competitors.
In addition to its 14th-place finish last Saturday, Memphis posted three top-five performances earlier this fall. The Tigers won titles at the Rhodes College and Austin Peay invitationals and placed fourth at the Brooks Twilight Classic. It is the first time that the Tigers women's program won two invitationals in the same season since 1990.
The Tigers men's and women's teams are back in action Oct. 14 when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete in the Crimson Classic. The races begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
