The 2017 roster will feature a new core group of players
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The new-look University of Memphis baseball team is back on the field for the start of fall camp with excitement levels high. A new core group of players is in place after the departures of six seniors and two juniors who were selected in this year's MLB Draft.
At the start of the fall semester, the Tigers got back to work with strength and conditioning coach Joe Collins to get physically prepared for the 2017 season. With fall baseball starting this week the team will get to focus more on baseball for the next six-plus weeks, culminating with the annual Garibaldi's Series in November.
"It is always a very exciting time, because of the way we structure the fall with five-plus weeks of strength and conditioning work, the guys are really chomping at the bit to get going," head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "We are going to do a lot of teaching at the beginning of the fall, mixed in with a lot of scrimmages. That way we can teach and evaluate both at the same time. Those are the priorities of the fall, to teach our system and evaluate the roster."
Memphis will have intrasquad scrimmages throughout the fall, starting with the first of the year on October 5.
The Tigers will have a unique opportunity this year when they host an MLB International Academy team made up exclusively of international players. The game will take place on Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at FedExPark. Admission to the game will be free and fans are encouraged to come get an early look at the Tigers.
Memphis will have six seniors in 2017, Andy Bowman, Chris Carrier, Ryan Garner, Brandon Grudzielanek, Zach Schritenthal and Trent Turner. Carrier and Schritenthal will be going into their fourth season as members of the Tigers.
Carrier, an outfielder, has a career batting average of .261 in 115 games played with 65 RBI and 67 runs scored. The Tigers' primary third baseman since 2014, Schritenthal has a .264 career batting average in 154 games played with 64 RBI and 78 runs scored.
The roster will also consist of nine juniors, including returning starting pitchers Connor Alexander and Colton Hathcock. Three of the juniors are transfers from junior college – Taylor Bobo, Kyle O'Keefe and Tyler Webb – and Brett Harrison joins the Tigers from North Dakota.
Memphis also returns eight sophomores who earned significant playing time as freshmen last season. 10 true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen will make up the remainder of the roster.
Last season the Tigers saw several young players get their first collegiate playing time with mixed results. The hope for the Tigers is that they will benefit from the experience those underclassmen already have.
"I'm excited to see what the 2017 Tigers can become," said Schoenrock.
Memphis opens the 2017 regular season against Tennessee with a three-game series at FedExPark that gets started on February 17 a 4 p.m. The Tigers will play 32 games at FedExPark and two games downtown at AutoZone Park in 2017.
