10 semifinalists to be announced on Friday, November 11
MEMPHIS – Junior punter Spencer Smith was included on the Ray Guy Candidate List that was released by the Augusta Sports Council, Monday. Smith, from Newton, Ga., leads the American Athletic Conference with a punt average of 45.1 yards per punt. Of his 29 punts so far this season, he has placed eight inside the 20 yard line, nine have gone for 50 or more yards and he has had 11 punts fair caught with just two touchbacks.

Smith's 45.1 yards per punt average is good for 14th in the current NCAA statistics, with Utah's Mitch Wishnowsky leading the country with a 48.8 yard average. Smith has twice had punts of 60 yards or more so far this season, including a season-best 63 yard punt in a road win at Tulane earlier this month. In Memphis' first conference win, against Temple, he had three 50-plus yard punts, including a 58-yarder.

The candidate list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists on Friday, Nov. 11th. Following that announcement, a national body of FBS Sports Information Directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the three finalists, announced Nov. 22nd. The 2016 Ray Guy Award winner will be announced on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8th.

The Tiger football team is preparing for another conference road game this weekend. Memphis plays at SMU, Saturday, at 3:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPNews.

Also announced Monday is that Memphis' next home game, a Nov. 12th game against USF, will be played at 6 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (ET) and will air on ESPNU.
