MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team has two fall tournaments remaining on its fall schedule, starting with the 29th Annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the University of Alabama, Friday. That event will run for three days and features players from 17 different teams in singles and doubles play.
Memphis will be joined at the event by Alabama State, Auburn, Chattanooga, Clemson, DePaul, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Mercer, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Samford, Troy, Tulane, UAB and West Alabama, in addition to host Alabama.
The schedule on Friday will start with a round of doubles at 9 a.m., followed by the first round of singles play. After lunch, the second round of singles will be played.
Saturday's schedule features two rounds of doubles play, also starting at 9 a.m., followed by singles after lunch.
Sunday has been reserved as a rain day for the event.
"Hopefully as we enter the last couple of matches in our fall schedule, all of the strength and conditioning work we've put in so far this fall will start to pay off," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "I like the short turnaround from last weekend's regional. We have some freshmen who weren't able to go to regionals, so it's been close to a month for them."
The event is named in honor of Robert Alison, who in 1963, became the first female to play tennis on the men's team at Alabama. She played three seasons at Alabama, primarily at four singles as a sophomore and one and two singles in her junior and senior seasons. She is a member of the Southern Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame and the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame in Williamsburg, Va.
At the same time as Alabama, Memphis had its own female tennis player on the men's team as Bonnie Donderville Farley was a member of the Tiger men's tennis program from 1963-65. She was inducted in to the M Club Hall of Fame in 1997 as a member of the men's tennis team.
