Peniston on to Finals at ITA Ohio Valley Singles Championship
Oct 23, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Junior comes back from 6-1 first set loss to win 7-3 in third set tiebreak.
MEMPHIS – Junior men's tennis player Ryan Peniston came back from a 6-1 first set loss and won the second set by an identical 6-1 score to force a third set in semifinal action at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships presented by Oracle, Sunday.
In the third set, Peniston and Kentucky's Beck Pennington still could not resolve the match and went to a tiebreaker. Peniston pushed through a 7-3 tiebreaker to claim the set and a berth in the singles championship final, Monday.
Peniston will face another Kentucky foe on Monday in the final. Trey Yates from Kentucky took out top seeded Daniel Valent from Vanderbilt in straight sets in the other semifinal, 6-3, 6-4, to grab his finals spot.
The doubles final will be played at 10 a.m. (ET), Monday, at the Gottfried Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee. The winner of the singles final will qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York City, Nov. 3-6. That 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles draw is played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Memphis has sent an entry to the national-level event. Doubles players David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury were the first in program history to win their way to the draw, winning the ITA Ohio Valley doubles championship in 2013. Then-freshman Andrew Watson (now a junior on the Tiger roster) became the first singles player to win his way to the event in 2014, also via the ITA Ohio Valley championship, winning the singles title.
This was the second straight season Peniston has made at least the semifinals of the ITA Regional. Last year, he and then-freshman Chris Patzanovsky advanced to the doubles semifinals
