MEMPHIS – Hanna Sohn and Anki Wind each advanced to the second round with straight set wins on Friday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional presented by Oracle.
Sohn, who won her way to the main draw, defeated Belmont's Lindsay Whitehead, 6-3, 7-6 (2) to advance to a Saturday 9 a.m. match against number nine seeded Marina Espana of East Tennessee State.
Wind also grabbed a straight set win, battling to a 7-5 first set win, then blanked Indiana's Kim Schmider, 6-0, in the second to advance to a Saturday morning match against Cristina DiLorenzo from Xavier. DiLorenzo is the nine seed in the draw.
"In singles, we competed hard and battled through a couple of tough sets," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "The conditions weren't ideal, but we handled them well mentally and that was the difference. We have some tough matches tomorrow and I am looking forward to seeing how we handle those."
After their singles wins, the duo paired up to play doubles, but were upended by the Chattanooga team of Edwards and Patton, 8-6.
Teammate Gabrielle Paul also played singles on Friday. She faced two seeded Oleksandra Doroshenko of Southeast Missouri State, but fell 6-2, 6-3, to end her B singles run.
