Tigers Advance Two to Doubles Quarters and Three to Singles Round of 16

MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team advanced two doubles entries to the quarterfinals and three singles entries to the Round of 16 at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships presented by Oracle, Friday.
The morning started with two rounds of doubles. The eighth seeded team of Andrew Watson and Kai Lemke defeated the Vanderbilt team of Newman and Virtanen, 8-6, and the team of Ryan Peniston and Felix Rauch downed Tennessee Tech's Bernandes and Tajes, 8-4, to advance to the round of 16. The lone Memphis entry to fall in the round of 32 was the team of Jan Pallares and Chris Patzanovsky. That duo fell to the 10th seeded team of Jones and Stodder from host Tennessee, 8-3.
Peniston and Rauch would then eliminate the two seed from the draw in the next round, defeating Indiana's Manji and Cembellin, 8-6. Teammates Watson and Lemke also won their Round of 16 doubles match, 8-6, defeating Middle Tennessee's Herrera and Nunez to advance to the Saturday quarterfinals. Watson and Lemke will face the top seeded team of Valero and Schipanski at 8 a.m., Saturday, in one quarterfinal while Peniston and Rauch face the unseeded team of Aviv Ben Shabat and Ari Gerstein from Butler in the fourth quarterfinal, also at 8 a.m. Shabat and Gerstein downed the sixth seeded team in the bracket on Friday in the Round of 16.
In singles play, Memphis pushed three of four singles entries in to the Round of 16. Peniston took down Louisville's Christopher Kougoucheff, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to 22 seeded Enzo Wallart of Kentucky at 10 am, Saturday. Eighth seeded Kai Lemke came back from a first set loss to 32 seeded Scott Jones of host Tennessee to battle to a 7-5 second set win and won 6-2 in the third to advance to a Saturday, 9 a.m. match against Baker Newman of Vanderbilt.
Pallares, a 30 seed in the draw, then defeated seven seeded Benjamin Ugarte of Purdue, 6-2, 6-2. He will now face 25 seeded Parker Wynn of Louisville at 10 am, Saturday.
Junior Andrew Watson was the lone Tiger to not advance to the Round of 16. Tennessee's Luca Wiedenmann grabbed a 6-3, 7-5 win to end Watson's singles run.
