Wins pair of Thursday singles matches to make the main draw.
MEMPHIS – Women's tennis player Hanna Sohn won two singles matches to earn a spot in the main singles draw at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional presented by Oracle, Thursday.
Sohn opened her qualifying singles draw with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Northern Kentucky's Klara Skopac, then had another tough match in the afternoon to punch her main draw ticket. After losing the first set 6-4 to Natalie DeUgarte from Western Kentucky, Sohn lost just one service game in the next two sets, winning 6-1, 6-0 to advance.
Teammate Gabrielle Paul also grabbed a pair of wins on day one of the tournament in the B Singles flight. She defeated Murray State's Sara Bjork, 6-2, 6-1, then downed Austin Peay's Helena Kuppig, 6-2, 7-5. She will next face the draw's two seed, Oleksandra Doroshenko of Southeast Missouri.
"This was a great day for the Tigers," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "Hanna was tested at times and was able to get through those moments. I'm proud of Gaby's efforts as well, she has been playing well lately and that continued today. She fought hard and it was good to see."
Freshman Clara Kuehn also played in the B singles draw on Thursday. She faced Eastern Kentucky's Putri Dwinta, but fell 6-3, 6-1. She will now play a consolation singles match against Southeast Missouri's Isasbelle Krupa, Friday, at 9 a.m.
