Katherine Cao Wins Flight 4 at Samford Round Robin

Freshman carrying a four-match win streak following the weekend.
MEMPHIS – Freshman women's tennis player Katherine Cao went 3-0 in singles to claim the Flight 4 title at the Samford Round Robin in Birmingham on Sunday. Cao used a 6-2, 7-5 win over Tulane's Sofia Kurtz on Sunday to complete her singles sweep in the event. She had battled to a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Southern Miss' Tzu-Hui Chen on Saturday to pick up Memphis' lone Saturday victory. With the weekend's wins, the freshman is now 4-2 on the season and carries a four-match winning streak.
In flight one singles, three different players tied with a 2-1 record, including junior Anki Wind. The tie was broken there by fewest games lost, so the flight was won by Pardis Kianoush, Wind's lone loss on the season. Kianoush downed Wind, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday, but Wind bounced back Sunday with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 win over Tulane's Naz Karagoz.
Flight two singles was won by Samford's Savannah Wood. Wood came back from a first set loss to Josephine Cao on Saturday to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, then downed Southern Miss' Tjasa Jerse, 6-4, 7-6. Josephine faced conference foe Elena Muller of Tulane on Sunday, falling 6-2, 6-2 to wrap up the tourney.
In doubles, the team of Wind and Josephine Cao swept the Tulane duo of Christina Sisti and Sofia Kurtz, 6-0 to finish 2-1 on the weekend. The Tiger tandem's lone loss on the weekend was to Flight 1 winners Kianoush and Marelen Herrmann of UAB on Saturday, 6-2.
The Tigers will now take a break from competition to begin preparation for the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, hosted this year at Middle Tennessee State University, Oct. 20-24th.
