PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It's a sweep for University of Memphis' Martina Rodriguez Sala in 2016.
The Tigers senior has competed in four races this season, placing in the top-five all four times. And, following each race, she was named the American Athletic Conference Female Runner of the Week. The league office announced Rodriguez Sala's latest honor Tuesday.
Rodriguez Sala has earned the weekly accolade each week she raced, taking home the accolade on Sept. 6, Sept. 20, Oct. 4 and Oct. 18. She ran in the Brooks Twilight Classic Sept. 3, Rhodes College Invitational Sept. 17, Greater Louisville Classic Oct. 1 and Crimson Classic Oct. 14.
Last Friday, Rodriguez Sala helped lead the Tigers women's squad to a sixth-place finish at the University of Alabama's Crimson Classic. It was squad's fourth top-15 performance of 2016. Earlier this season, Memphis placed fourth at the Brooks Twilight Classic and won the Rhodes College and Austin Peay invitationals.
The Crimson Classic was the final tune-up for colleges across the Southeast, as their next races are conference championships at the end of October. Memphis runs in the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio, Oct. 29.
The Olot, Spain, native posted her fourth top-five performance of the season in the 6k Crimson Classic last Friday. The 6k race was the team's first of 2016, as the previous four competitions were 5k.
