Oct 15, 2016 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS – The Memphis men's tennis team advanced three of four entries to the championship finals of their respective flights on day one of the Louisville Fall Invitational, Saturday. Freshmen Matt Story and Turner Voges advanced to the semifinals of their own flights, while Shakeel Manji advanced to the semis of the B Singles draw.
In the A singles draw, Story advanced with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Wright State's Jonas Vrezing, then prevailed in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 decision against Xavier's Jeremy Schneider to advance to a semifinal match against Louisville's Brandon Lancaster, Sunday.
In that same draw, teammate Felix Rauch came back from a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Tennessee Tech's Guillermo Nicolas to advance to the consolation semis. Rauch was up 6-2 when his opponent, Carsten Fisher from Dayton, was forced to retire. Rauch will now face Illinois State's Urh Krajnc Domiter in the consolation semifinal in the A singles bracket.
In the B bracket, Manji opened with a comeback win. After losing his opening set of the tournament, 6-3, Manji won the second and third 6-4, 6-2, over Dayton's Lorenzo Rollhauser to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Manji again went three sets, this time winning his first set 6-1, then falling 6-4 in the second set. Manji prevailed in the third against Tennessee Tech's Jorge Alfonzo, 6-3, to advance to a Sunday semifinal against Illinois State's Dylan Steffens.
In the C singles bracket, Turner Voges opened his run with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Austin Peay's Alex Kartsonis. He then prevailed in a three-set match against Xavier's Nick Werner, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Voges will face Illinois State's Christoffer Greve, Sunday.
In doubles play, the Tigers are on the consolation side of the A bracket after Story and Rouch fell to the Tennessee Tech team of Nicolas and Alfonso, 8-7 (4). The duo came back later to defeat Michigan's Johnston and Gardiner, 8-2, to advance to a Sunday consolation final against the Xavier pairing of Bishop and Araujo.
