Jake Elliott Named to Senior CLASS List
Oct 14, 2016 | Football
MEMPHIS – Senior place kicker Jake Elliott was named one of 30 candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award it was announced Friday. The honor is given each year to student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Elliott became Memphis' all-time leading scorer last week in a win over defending American Athletic Conference East Division champions Temple. Elliott passed DeAngelo Williams and Stephen Gostkowski to take over the top spot on the career scoring charts with 371 points.
The two-time, defending American Athletic Conference Special Teams player of the year, Elliott has also been active in the Memphis community in his senior season. He has visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, helped host a fall festival for patients staying at Target House and participated in granting a wish with the Make-A-Wish Foundation already this season.
In the classroom, Elliott carries a 3.86 GPA in marketing management and is a multiple-time Dean's List honoree. Elliott, a second team All-American on a pair of teams last season, was also a 2015 finalist for the Lou Groza Award, awarded to the nation's top place kicker.
He comes in to a conference road game at Tulane on Friday having made 170-of-170 point after attempts, the longest active consecutive PAT streak in FBS football. He currently ranks fourth in the NCAA in active career field goals made (87) and ranks seventh in career field goals per game (1.56).
In addition to the Tiger scoring record, Elliott holds some of the top field goals made marks in program history. Of the top 10 kicks in program history, seven of them have been converted by Elliott, including a 56-yard field goal, the current program record. He is 9-for-13 in field goal attempts from 50 yards or more for his Memphis career, including one already this season.
So far this year, Elliott has had just nine of 39 kickoffs returned, averaging a career-best 64.6 yard average, keeping the ball out of opposing returners hands. For his career, he has had just 90 returns on 275 kickoffs, with just nine balls kicked out of bounds.
Elliott is one of four players from the American Athletic Conference on the list of 30 candidates. He is joined as a candidate by Tulsa's Dave Evans, East Carolina's Zay Jones and Houston's Greg Ward, Jr.
The 10 finalists will be announced later in the season and placed on an official ballot. That ballot will be voted on by media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in early January. For more information, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
