Peniston Advances to Round of 16 at Oracle ITA Masters

Junior grabs straight set win in opening round in California.
MEMPHIS—Junior men's tennis player Ryan Peniston advanced to the Round of 16 at the Oracle ITA Masters event at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, Thursday, with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Army's Michael Nguyen.
With the win, Peniston advances to a Friday match against Columbia's Shawn Hadavi. Hadavi came back from a tough 7-5 first set loss to win 6-4, 6-3 in the second and third sets to advance to the Friday matchup.
Tiger Andrew Watson lost in his opening round match to Denver's Diogo Rocha, 6-0, 6-3. He will now have one round of consolation singles on his schedule, Friday, where he will face UMKC's Airam Castellano.
Both Tigers lost their mixed doubles matches on Thursday afternoon. There will be no consolation doubles played on Friday.
While Peniston and Watson are in California, four of their teammates are en route Louisville for their Fall Invitational. Junior Shakeel Manji, sophomore Felix Rauch and freshmen Matt Story and Turner Voges will all participate in the Louisville tournament.
That event will be played Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. There are players from 12 participating teams at the event: Austin Peay, Bellarmine, Campbellsville, Dayton, Illinois State, Lipscomb, Louisville, Michigan, Tennessee Tech, Wright State and Xavier.
