Peniston and Watson In National ITA Event in California

MEMPHIS – Junior men's tennis players Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson have been added to the field at the Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) event that gets underway at Pepperdine University and at the Malibu Racquet Club, Thursday.

This is the second year for the Oracle ITA Masters event, which expanded the field to include one collegiate player from each NCAA Division I conference. Each conference was invited to send one men's and one women's player, with criteria similar to the NCAA tournament being used. That caused the bracket to expand from the 16 players in last year's field to 32 in the draw this year. A 32-team mixed doubles event was also be added to the 2016 event, a new experience for the collegiate tennis players.

Both Peniston and Watson are making their first appearance at the event. Peniston is the four seed in the men's singles draw and will open against Army's Michael Nguyen. Watson is opening his tournament against Denver's Diogo Rocha. Peniston will begin play at 1 p.m. (PT) on Thursday, with Watson starting at 1:30 p.m. (PT)

In doubles play, Peniston is teaming with Akron's Ariadna Blinova. They will open against Pepperdine pairing of Laura Gulbe and Lautaro Pane in the opening round. Watson will team with Austin Peay's Lidia Yanes Garcia and will face a Baylor tandem of Bryce Shankle and Max Tchoutakian.
