Tigers Rifle Moves Up Two Spots In National Poll
Oct 11, 2016 | Rifle
Memphis, No. 8 this week, has six wins over ranked teams.
MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Memphis rifle squad is ranked No. 8 in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll. The Tigers climbed two spots from the No. 10 spot in last week's CRCA poll.
The No. 8 national ranking is Memphis' highest since it was No. 6 in last season's Oct. 13 poll.
Memphis is coming off an Oct. 9-10 East Coast road swing where it swept matches over then-No. 14 Navy and then-No. 13 Army. The victory over Army was the Tigers' first over the Black Knights in West Point, N.Y., in the program's history.
After three matches, the Tigers have six wins over ranked opponents. In addition to recent victories over Navy and Army, Memphis also defeated four ranked foes – Ole Miss, Jacksonville State, Akron and UT Martin – in its own Tiger Open.
Four-time defending NCAA champion West Virginia reclaimed the No. 1 position in this week's poll, followed by No. 2 TCU and No. 3 Air Force. Murray State and Kentucky round out the top-five.
All nine Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) programs are in the poll with West Virginia at No. 1, followed by No. 5 Kentucky, No. 8 Memphis, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 10 Ole Miss, No. 11 Navy, No. 13 N.C. State, No. 14 Army and No. 19 Akron.
Memphis returns to action Oct. 22 when it hosts No. 18 UT Martin.
