Tigers recorded team GPA of 3.70 during 2015-16
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team recorded the highest grade point average in all of Division I during the 2015-16 academic year, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced.
"I am extremely proud of our women's soccer team and head coach Brooks Monaghan and his staff. This is a result of the culture here in our athletic department that we have been creating since 2012 at the University of Memphis," Director of Athletics Tom Bowen said. "These student-athletes work each day to be the best, both in their athletic performance and in their academic pursuits. This is a fine example of that."
The team GPA of 3.70 is the program's highest ever, after Memphis posted a 3.60 in 2014-15 and in 2009-10.
Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan's program has a history of academic success, claiming a 10th consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award this season. To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year.
The Tigers had a higher GPA than 334 NCAA Division I women's soccer programs. Four other American Athletic Conference schools posted a GPA over 3.00, Cincinnati (3.51), East Carolina (3.51), SMU (3.27) and Temple (3.51).
Memphis women's soccer has proven to be the premier academic program in the American Athletic Conference as well, receiving the league's Team Academic Excellence Award in back-to-back seasons.
"This is an amazing accomplishment for our young ladies," Monaghan said. "It is something that I preach to every recruit that comes here with their family: school comes first, soccer second and social life third. For all of our kids, at some point, there will be life after soccer. This is not only great for this program, but also for this university, to have a team finish first in the country in academics."
Last season, seniors Marissa Duguay and Elysia Masters were both named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. Both players had higher than a 3.90 overall GPA in their careers. The Tigers have had 19 players named to the Academic All-District teams since 2004.
This season, the Tigers are 9-3-1 and unbeaten on their home field. Memphis is 3-1 in league play with wins over Temple, East Carolina and Cincinnati. There are just five matches remaining this season, with three at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
