Tigers Enjoy Opportunity Against MLB International Academy Team
Oct 10, 2016 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team put together a dominating performance against an MLB International Academy team, winning 11-0, Monday afternoon at FedExPark.
"The thing we did today was just deny free bases and if you do that it means you are dominating the routine and throwing a lot of strikes," Memphis head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "Offensively we are going to be a team that will swing the bat 1-through-9. The guys were excited to have the opportunity to play somebody in a different uniform in the fall, which we don't get very often. It's a rarity and our guys handled it fine."
10 different Memphis pitchers combined to shutout the international team, with a roster consisting of players from 12 different countries represented. Colton Hathcock, Drew Crosby, Connor Alexander, Alex Hicks, Colton Neel, Hunter Smith, Bryan Cruse, Ryan Garner, Tommy Morren and Blake Bennett each put up a zero in the game.
The Tigers hashed out 11 runs on 16 hits, including a solo home run by senior infielder Trent Turner in the fifth inning. Turner finished the game 2-for-2 with a single and a walk. He drove in two runs.
Memphis scored at least a run in the second through seventh innings. The Tigers biggest inning was a three-run seventh.
Newcomer Tyler Webb was 2-for-2 with two singles. He drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Junior Carlos Williams had a single and drove in a run with sac fly as well. Redshirt freshman Nick Vaage had two hits and drove in two runs.
The Tigers will continue their fall schedule for the next several weeks, culminating with the annual Garibaldi's Series that concludes in mid-November. Memphis opens the 2017 regular season against Tennessee with a three-game series at FedExPark that gets started on February 17 a 4 p.m. The Tigers will play 32 games at FedExPark and two games downtown at AutoZone Park in 2017.
