SMU heads into the weekend game after recording its first setback of the season, 89-80 at the hands of the Temple Owls.
In the game, Sterling Brown scored a team-high 19 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, leading five players in double-figure scoring. Jordan Tolbert scored 15 points with eight rebounds, as Nic Moore had 10 points and seven assists.
For the season the team is led by defending American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Nic Moore, who averages 15.3 points and leads the Conference with 91 assists. Ben Moore averages 13 points, as Jordan Tolbert scored 12.6 points and pulling down 9.2 rebounds per game.
Ben Moore has blocked a team-best 24 shots, with Nic Moore leading the team with 22 steals. As a team, the Mustangs shot 51 percent from the field, and 41 percent from beyond the arc.
Against the UCF Knights, Shaq Goodwin had a game for the ages. He scored a career-high 24 points by halftime, and ended the game with 35 points - two away from the program record for points in a conference game. He hit 15-of-23 shots in the contest, the makes tying for fifth-most in a game in NCAA Division I this season, and also tying the program record for field goals made in a conference game.
After the completion of action on the hardwood on Wednesday evening, the battle for the top seed in the upcoming American Athletic Conference Tournament got even murkier. Going into the evening, the top two contenders on the standings - Tulsa and Temple - each lost. As it stands now, the difference from the top seed record (4-2) and the seventh seed record (4-4) is just one game.
Over the course of the last three games, the Memphis Tigers have faced off against teams from three of the five highest populated states with NCAA Division I schools. Saturday's opponent, SMU, resides in Texas, which has 23 Division I opponents, with the Tigers sporting a 118-44 record against those, and have played 20 of the 23 teams (with the only exceptions being Texas State, recent Division I addition Incarnate Word, and new school UTRGV (University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley).
For the game in Dallas, the Memphis coaching staff will be wearing basketball shoes with their suits in recognition of Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers. The team is taking part in the nationwide event when basketball coaches across the country unite for a common cause - saving lives from cancer! Coaches and their staff wear sneakers with their suits while coaching games to raise awareness, share the importance of nutrition and physical activity, and to promote the American Cancer Society as a place for people facing cancer to turn to for free information, help, and support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Hundreds of local and national basketball game broadcasts will help focus on the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission and how everyone can fight back against cancer. It's as simple as lacing up your sneakers!
Memphis holds a 10-6 lead in the all-time series over the Mustangs all-time, and are 4-3 all-time in Dallas (not including two games vacated by the NCAA from the 2007-08 season). The teams have split each of the last six games in the series, with the last Memphis win in Dallas coming on February 6, 2013.
