Memphis scheduled to host Denver at 9 a.m.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (1-0) is scheduled to host Denver (0-0) in a non-conference tennis match, Friday, at 9 a.m.
Memphis won its spring dual opener last week, 6-1, over visiting Chattanooga, and will face a tough test in Denver on Friday morning. The Pioneers are in town in preparation for the ITA Kickoff weekend, which they will play in Nashville, Saturday through Monday.
Denver is highlighted by sophomore Julia O'Loughlin, who started the spring as the No. 62 ranked singles player in the country. She and teammate Maureen Slattery are also ranked in doubles play, sporting a No. 44 ranking and will be a tough test for the top of the Tiger lineup.
Memphis won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches against Chattanooga in its opener. The Tigers' top doubles team of Anki Wind and Hanna Sohn lost in a tiebreak, 7-6 (1), but Memphis' wins at two and three secured the doubles point in the team score. Kathryn Hughes picked up wins in both doubles and singles, putting the Tigers' first singles point in the books with a straight set win at No. 3.
Marta Morga also gave the team depth, not playing doubles to focus on singles play at No. 4. She added a straight set win as well against Chattanooga.
Denver has three singles players who are regionally ranked in the ITA Mountain Region. In addition to O'Loughlin, who is ranked No. 2 in the region, are Slattery and Bianca Mok. Slattery and Mok are both tied for third in the regional rankings, looking to build a profile to break in to the national rankings through the Tennessee weekend of play.
After the Friday match, Denver will face defending national champs Vanderbilt, Saturday, at 10 a.m. Memphis will play its first road contest of the year on Saturday, Feb. 6th, facing No. 25 ranked Ole Miss at noon in Oxford.
Admission to the Friday match against Denver is free. The match will be played indoors at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
