Season opener being played indoors at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (0-0) will open its spring dual season Sunday at 10 a.m. at The Racquet Club of Memphis against Chattanooga (0-0). It is the season opener for both teams.
The Lady Tigers return four players from last season's squad that finished 9-14 against one of the toughest schedules in school history.
Second year head coach Hayden Perez has a more balanced scheduled this year and has been able to schedule home matches on the indoor courts at The Racquet Club of Memphis around the ATP 250's Memphis Open in February. Sunday's match-up with Chattanooga will be the first meeting between the two in-state foes since 2014, but it's the visiting Mocs that hold the series advantage, 9-7. Memphis won the last meeting, 4-0, and has not lost a meeting in the match in town since 2004 (5-2).
Sunday's dual match will be the first for freshman Janina Berres and will be the first in a Memphis uniform for transfers Gabrielle Paul and Hanna Sohn. Sohn led Memphis with a 5-4 singles mark during the fall, with senior Anki Wind one win behind her with a 4-6 overall mark. The duo teamed up to lead the Lady Tigers in doubles play with a 5-6 record.
The visiting Mocs will feature a Memphis product on their roster. Senior Kayla Jones is a graduate of White Station High School and is a two-time SoCon all-conference award winner who went 22-9 in singles last year.
Admission to the match is free. Live scoring will be available at: www.memphis.statbroadcast.com.
