Women seventh, men 10th at 13th-annual Brooks Twilight Classic.
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior Corentin Louis and junior Martina Rodriguez Sala paced the Tigers men's and women's cross country squad's, respectively, at the 13th-annual Brooks Twilight Classic held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex late Saturday night.
The women's 5k race started at 9:20 p.m. (CT), with the men's 4-mile event following at 10 p.m. (CT).
Louis was the men's top finisher in 35th place with a time of 21:00.46 and improved his time nearly 13 seconds from a year ago. Rodriguez Sala placed 18th (18:14.48) in the women's race and improved her time over 38 seconds from last season's Classic performance.
"I'm really pleased with how the women's team performed tonight," said head coach Kevin Robinson. "Martina did a phenomenal job tonight and is way ahead of where she was last year at this time. We missed Kristen (Adams) tonight with her injury, but we hope to get her back soon. I liked the way they competed with a lot heart tonight.
"For the men, Corentin ran really strong, and Diego ran a good race. We had a good grouping behind those two, but we need to work on closing the gap a little more. I told the guys I was looking for competitive composure tonight, and for the most part, we accomplished that.
"This also gives me a chance to analyze the results and see where our strengths and weaknesses are for both teams and work from there. This meet provided us a great start to the season."
Following Louis on the men's side were two freshmen in the second and fourth spots. Diego Lara Delgado was the squad's second finisher in 47th with a time of 21:14.83, and Colby Caldwell was fourth for Memphis in 72nd place (21:44.28). Sophomore Brock Ballard was the team's third finisher (66th; 21:34.08).
On the women's side, sophomore Chelsea Ladd was the squad's second finisher at 39th (19:17.74). Abigail Tankersley, a transfer from Alabama, ran in her first meet for the Blue and Gray Saturday. She was the team's third finisher at 42nd (19:21.46). Sophomore Megan Briley placed just behind Tankersley in 44th (19:27.68).
Sophomore Kristen Adams, who placed seventh at last year's Classic, missed Saturday's meet with an injury. Later in 2014, she earned All-American Athletic Conference honors as a freshman with her 13th-place finish at the league championships.
Alabama swept the men's and women's college team titles at the Brooks Twilight Classic.
