The Memphis women's soccer team will be looking to get a win streak started when they travel to Nashville to play Dartmouth in a neutral site game, Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Vanderbilt's Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. The Tigers are 2-1 after the first two weeks of the season while the Big Green are 1-0 and will face Vandy Friday night.
Â
After a tough loss to Samford last Friday, the Tigers got a bounce-back win over UAB on Sunday. They needed a quick start and got it with a goal from junior forward Necee Jennings in the seventh minute.
Â
The experienced back line was back to its usual form and completely dominated the Blazers from start to finish. UAB was held without a shot in the second half of the match.
Â
"When you get beat like we did it's going to truly test your character in the next match," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I think it was a massive wake-up call. Everybody raised their hand and said they can do better. Sunday I was very impressed with our girls. The effort and focus were there."
Â
In the Tigers' two wins this season they have played outstanding defense and needed just the one goal to win. Maryse Bard-Martel has been solid in goal and other than the match against Samford she hasn't been tested very often.
Â
One thing lacking for Memphis early in the season is a finishing touch in front of the net with only three goals in three matches. The Tigers will be hoping that junior forward Valerie Sanderson, who has 31 career goals in 43 games, can add to her scoring record. So far this season she has just five shots and one goal.
Â
Dartmouth started the season with a 2-0, shutout win at Marist last Sunday. Senior co-captains Lucielle Kozlov and Corey Delaney each scored in the win. Goalkeeper Katie Fuhs made three saves for the Green in the match.
Â
Last season Dartmouth finished with an 8-5-4 record and went 3-1-3 in Ivy League play to finish second in the conference.
Â
"The focus is on us. We want to do all of the little things right and be the best we can. Let's make them adjust to us and let's just play our brand of soccer. If the kids come in with the right mentality and attitude and they stick to the game plan it will give us a great chance to win," Monaghan said.
Â
The Tigers will return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex for a pair of games next week. Memphis hosts UT Martin Friday at 7:30 p.m. before playing Idaho Sunday at 1:00 p.m.Â
