Women’s Golf Hosting Lone Home Event of the Year Starting Monday
Sep 13, 2015 | Women's Golf
Memphis hosting Memphis Intercollegiate beginning Monday.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis women's golf team will host its lone event of the entire 2015-16 athletic calendar year at Ridgeway Country Club beginning at 8:30 a.m., Monday and Tuesday. The Memphis Women's Intercollegiate will feature 15 women's team and a total of 97 golfers. Two rounds will be played on Monday, while the third round will be contested, Tuesday.
Memphis finished second last year in the event and looks to push for a tournament win to start the season beginning Monday. This will be the final home event for seniors Ashleigh Whisenant and Julia Gerlach. Whisenant will compete on Memphis' team entry, while Gerlach will compete as an individual.
Junior Leighann Cabush will lead the Lady Tiger team contingent in the tournament. Cabush qualified in the number one slot for the team, and will tee off of one. Cabush has finished top 10 in each of her previous two appearances at the Memphis Intercollegiate, finishing tied for sixth in her freshman campaign with a 224, while shaving 10 strokes off that and posting a career-best 214 last year to finish fourth overall.
Freshman Madison Thomas qualified second and will also tee off of one, just ahead of Cabush's threesome.
Sophomores Emily Goldenstein and Megan Beane will go off of two. This will be Goldenstein's second tournament appearance, but will be Beane's first, as she missed last fall with an injury. Goldenstein finished tied for 17th in last year's Memphis Intercollegiate with a 223. She went on to post four top 10 finishes in her freshman campaign and will be Memphis' fourth golfer Monday morning.
Whisenant will round out the team entry and will tee off of hole three in the shotgun start. This will be Whisenant's fifth appearance at the Memphis Intercollegiate. She finished 16th at this event last year with a 222, then suffered an injury at Memphis' next event and missed the remainder of the year. She was granted a waiver by the NCAA and is playing her final collegiate season beginning Monday.
In addition to Gerlach's individual entry, Memphis will have two other individuals in the field. Freshman Sydney Colwill and redshirt junior Andrea Cropper will also compete in the home event. Gerlach and Colwill will go off of 18 while Cropper goes off 17. Cropper finished in the top 50 last year, finishing tied for 43rd with a 236, a 10-stroke improvement from her 2013 showing. Gerlach finished tied for 27th last season, posting a season-best 230 score.
