Tigers Rebound with 1-0 Win at UAB
Aug 30, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Necee Jennings scored her first career goal to notch the win
Memphis got a goal from Necee Jennings in just the seventh minute of the match and then the Tigers completely stifled UAB to come out with a 1-0 win Sunday night in Birmingham, Ala. The Tigers improved to 2-1-0 this season and continue their road stretch next week with a match against Dartmouth in Nashville, Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Â
Jennings got the Tigers out to a great start, scoring her first career goal in the opening minutes. The junior forward, who was celebrating a birthday on Sunday, returned to the starting lineup after only playing from the bench against Samford.
Â
"Winning is not easy. So first of all I'm proud of the girls for bouncing back from a tough loss on Friday," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I thought they showed great character, with their hustle and determination. They had the mentality that we weren't going to lose."
Â
The win was similar to the Tigers first of the season in which they beat Alabama, 1-0. In the first two wins of the season, Memphis has relied heavily on its group of experienced defenders along with goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel.
Â
Memphis had other opportunities to score in the first half but couldn't extend the lead. The Tigers had five total shots on target before halftime and forced three saves out of the Blazers' goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez.
Â
After keeping UAB off the board in the first half, the Memphis defense completely stifled the Blazers in the second half.
Â
It was a dominant display by the Tigers, as they didn't allow a single shot in the second half. Bard-Martel had to make just three saves in the first half and was untroubled after halftime. UAB also didn't have a single corner kick in the match.
Â
Neither team created many opportunities in the second half but with 15 minutes left, freshman Elizabeth Woerner fired a shot on target that was saved by Jimenez to keep the score 1-0. Â Woerner started and played 82 minutes.
Â
"We have some young players that are playing a lot of minutes. It's going to take time. But I have a lot of faith in this team and a lot of belief in the future. This weekend was good for us," said. Monaghan.
Â
Memphis will return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to host UT Martin on Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will then host Idaho that Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
