Tigers Hold Final Scrimmage
Aug 22, 2015 | Football
Mock game slated for next Saturday at Liberty Bowl
Ahead of a line of thunderstorms which moved over the city late Saturday morning, the Memphis Tigers went through a final scrimmage at the Murphy Athletic Complex. The Tigers were able to get the practice in ahead of the storms.
Â
With the scrimmage now in the books, only one Saturday separates the team from its season opener on Sept. 5 when the UofM plays host to Missouri State.
Â
Saturday's final scrimmage of camp was described by Memphis head coach Justin Fuente as having some give and take.
Â
"As the head coach, you can take it a bunch of different ways," he said. "At times the offense moved the ball, and at other times they didn't move the ball. At times the defense played really well, and at times they didn't. I don't know what that means yet, except as a whole, we are moving in the right direction but we still have work to do."
Â
The team will not practice on Sunday and Monday as the student-athletes will have an opportunity to focus on the start of the academic year. Classes begin at the University of Memphis on Monday.
Â
Memphis will practice next on Tuesday and will cap the week with a mock game set for Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium next Saturday morning. The mock game will put the Tigers through a wide-range of situations and mark the culmination of the preseason for the team. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with gates opening at 10:30.
Â
Through 19 practices, Fuente summation following Saturday's practice was the Tigers are still a work in progress.
Â
"I have seen some growth as a team," he said. "To have a fundamentally young football team and put them through what we did the last couple weeks, I think there have been some really bright spots in the way they have come together and worked. I think there is a lot of work still to be done. It is going to be a process through the season."
