Seven-Run Inning Sinks Memphis in Series-Opener
May 08, 2015 | Baseball
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Memphis held a 2-0 lead through three and a half innings before UCF scored seven runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 10-2 win Friday night at Jay Bergman Field.
Memphis will try to even the series up in Game Two Saturday at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
Tucker Tubbs gave Memphis an early lead with his 15th home run of the season in the top of the second inning. Tubbs battled back from an 0-2 count to work the count full, before blasting the line-drive homer into the gap in left-center.
The Tigers added to their lead with some two-out hits in the top of the third inning. Darien Tubbs lined a hustling double to right-center field before Zach Schritenthal drove him in with a single through the right side of the infield. Kane Barrow walked to put two runners on with two outs but the Tigers were unable to add to the lead.
Memphis threatened again in the fourth but was unable to add to its lead. Nate Rupiper was hit by the first pitch of the inning before Carter White singled through the right side of the infield. Jake Little advanced the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Rodgers was able to get out of the jam with two strikeouts to end the frame.
UCF made the Tigers pay for squandering opportunities in the previous two innings. Alex Gunn quickly got the first out of the fourth inning before the Knights proceeded to load the bases on two singles and a walk.
A single by Matt Diorio got UCF on the board and kept the bases loaded with one out. A fielder's choice ground out scored the tying run, but an errant throw allowed the go-ahead run to come home.
Memphis couldn't get out of the inning as the Knights managed to leg out back-to-back bunt singles to make the score 4-2 and reload the bases with one out.
After Gunn had started extremely well through the first three innings his day ended in the fourth. Reliever Craig Caufield got the first out on a pop up but UCF scored another run on a passed ball before a two-run single made the score 7-2.
UCF added to its lead with two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the eighth.
Craig Caufield pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and four walks. Trey McNickle allowed one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Colin Lee recorded the final two outs of the game.
