Tigers Fall to Houston 1-0 in Thrilling AAC Quarterfinal
May 07, 2015 | Softball
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Memphis Tigers run in the American Athletic Conference Tournament was cut short as they fell in a heart breaker 1-0 to the Houston Cougars at UCF Softball Complex on Thursday morning.
Memphis finishes its season with a 19-34 record, and a 6-12 AAC mark, while Houston moves to 28-26 and will play the winner of the Connecticut versus Tulsa game on Friday afternoon.
The game could have not been any more similar to the first meeting between pitchers Jordan Richwood and Julana Shrum, when Richwood was the victorious pitcher in a 1-0 Tiger win. This time Shrum got the victory, but both pitchers were great. Each allowed only three hits, and Richwood struck out three to Shrum's one.
Richwood finishes the season with an 11-18 record. Thursday's game marked her fifth-straight complete game and second against the Cougars.
Both pitchers had only one walk, but Richwood's proved to be the most costly. Kaylin Crumpton earned the lone Cougar walk in the first inning. She advanced to second on a ground out, and then the designated player Shelby Miller came through with an RBI single to center. Crumpton came in to score the only run of the game. The run snapped a streak of 24 scoreless innings from Richwood.
Memphis struggled to get hits against Shrum, and the three hits the Tigers did get were spread out. Haleigh Ross had two of them as she singled in both of her at bats. Lindsay Crowdus had the other when she singled through the left side with one out in the fourth. Memphis got runners to second base twice in the game, but no further than that.
Shrum took the win for Houston and moved to 13-10 on the season. She finishes the season 2-1 against Memphis and threw a complete game in all three matchups.
