Memphis, Tenn. -- Memphis jumped out to an early lead and starter Alex Gunn pitched a season-high seven innings to lead the Tigers to a 7-1 win over Mississippi State Tuesday night. The game was the final this season for Memphis at AutoZone Park.
The Tigers (21-8, 4-2 AAC) showed their ability throughout the game to score runs in multiple ways. Memphis scored one in the first inning, three in the third and three more in the eighth to cap it off.
Memphis took advantage of some freebies by Mississippi State in the first inning. Center fielder Darien Tubbs walked to start the game, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out. He opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Kane Barrow.
It was a completely different story in the third as the Tigers teed off on the Bulldogs' starter Austin Sexton. For the second straight night Memphis hit back-to-back home runs in a game.
Barrow started a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning with a hammered double down the left field line and first baseman Tucker Tubbs followed with a two-run homer to left field. Right fielder Chris Carrier followed with a solo shot to nearly the exact same spot over the wall in left.
Tubbs' homer was his second in as many games. He finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Gunn was sharp right from the start and held Mississippi State off the board for the first five frames. The senior left-hander would have tossed a perfect first inning if not for a two-out error at shortstop. Zach Schritenthal would get instant redemption as he was able to get the out on his next opportunity.
Gunn labored a bit in the second inning after a pop up dropped in right field for a hit. He issued a two-out walk but was able to get out of the inning with a ground out to third base.
Mississippi State would only have one base runner from the third through the fifth innings as Gunn retired nine straight batters at one point.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the sixth after a lead-off double came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center field. Gunn did well to get out of the inning without more damage.
Sexton settled in after the Tigers' two homers in the third and held Memphis down in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Montgomery gave the Tigers some insurance with his third hit of the game, a two-run triple into the gap in right-center field. He scored from third on an error to make the score 7-1. The freshman finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Blake Myers tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Memphis and closer Nolan Blackwood followed with a clean ninth. The appearance by Blackwood was his first in a non-save situation.
Memphis will hit the road for a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Cincinnati (8-21, 2-4 AAC). The Bearcats took two-of-three from Central Florida last weekend and will play at Indiana Wednesday night. The series between the two teams gets underway Friday at 5:05 p.m. Central Time.
