Tubbs Grand Slam Fuels 8-3 Win at Arkansas State

Jonesboro, Ark. -- Tucker Tubbs blasted a grand slam to cap off a five-run seventh inning as Memphis rallied for an 8-3 win at Arkansas State Tuesday night. The victory, Memphis' 30th of the season, clinched the season sweep of Arkansas State.
The Tigers trailed for the first three innings and then trailed again going into the seventh inning.
Reliever Trey McNickle worked the final two innings to pick up his first career save. The junior right-hander didn't allow a hit as he kept the Red Wolves off the board.
Colton Hathcock pitched 2/3 of an inning and picked up his second win of the season.
After ASU had scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers went right to work in the next half inning. Brandon Montgomery and pinch-hitter Nate Rupiper both singled with one out and then moved up on a passed ball. Montgomery scored on a wild pitch to cut into the lead before ASU went back to the bullpen.
Reliever Tanner Kirby walked Kane Barrow to load the bases with two outs and bring Tucker Tubbs to the plate. The senior first baseman hit his second grand slam of the season to give the Tigers their first lead of the game.
Barrow was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one run driven in. Tubbs finished 2-for-5 with five RBI.
Arkansas State grabbed an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. The Red Wolves' first baseman Zach George opened the first with a single through the left side of the infield, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt, stole third base with one out and scored on a wild pitch.
Damo DeMatteo, making his first start since March, gunned down a runner attempting to steal second base to end the bottom of the first inning.
Memphis tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth. Kane Barrow opened the fourth with a single and Tucker Tubbs followed with a walk. Carter White advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Jake Little drove in the run with an RBI groundout to first base.
Arkansas State retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Red Wolves got runners to second and third with one out, prompting a pitching change by Memphis
The first pitch from reliever Colton Hathcock was wild, allowing the first run of the inning to score. An infield single to shortstop made the score 3-1.
Blake Myers came out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the seventh and walked the first two batters he faced. The senior left-hander settled in and got out of the jam without any runs.
Memphis tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning, capped off by an RBI double by Tucker Tubbs.
The Tigers are back at FedExPark Wednesday to host Mississippi Valley State at 1:00 p.m.
