Tigers Take Road Series from South Florida
Apr 26, 2015 | Softball
TAMPA, Fla. -- Brittany Vuaghn had only one hit over the weekend, but it couldn't have come at a better time. The sophomore singled to center with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 win against South Florida at USF Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was the second inning in a row the Tigers (16-31, 4-11 American Athletic Conference) had loaded the bases with two outs. In the previous inning, Haleigh Ross battled through a 10-pitch at bat before pitcher Karla Claudio finally got Ross to pop up to end the inning.
With the win in the series finale, the Tigers took two of the three games and won their first conference series. The Bulls (34-17, 5-8 AAC) lost a conference series at home for the second-straight week. USF dropped the final two games of its series against East Carolina as well.
Holding the Bulls scoreless was Jordan Richwood (9-17). The senior pitcher spent all game keeping South Florida batters off balance. Despite having just one strike out, Richwood allowed only three hits and walked one batter as she picked up her second complete game and second win in as many days.
USF employed two of its senior pitchers, with Claudio (8-4) taking the loss. Sam Greiner got the start and threw 5.2 scoreless innings. Memphis batters picked up five hits on her and also drew a walk. Claudio came in to face Thomas in the sixth with runners on first and second. Thomas singled in the infield and then Claudio got Ross out to end that threat.
Getting things going for the Tigers in the final inning was Addison Maxwell, though her impact didn't start there. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulls had two outs with Danna Devine standing on second. She had reached on a walk and then stole second. Juli Weber singled through the right side and Devine chose to round third and head home. Maxwell came up throwing and Ross made a nice play to catch and then apply the tag in time for the final out to preserve the tie.
With one out in the seventh, Maxwell came to the plate and singled up the middle. She finished 3-3 on the game and 6-9 in the series. Kyler Trosclair followed with a single of her own, and then Hannah Harrell moved them to second and third with a bunt.
South Florida elected to walk Lindsay Crowdus, who doubled and tripled in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, to load the bases for Vaughn. She quickly fell behind 0-2, and then fouled off a couple of pitches and took a pitch high. On the sixth pitch of the at bat, Vaughn reached out on a pitch that was a little outside and lined it over the pitcher and into center field. Maxwell and Trosclair came around to score the only two runs.
Next up for the Tigers is a Tuesday midweek doubleheader against Murray State. First pitch for game one is set for 4 p.m. Follow the Tigers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @MemphisSoftball to stay up-to-date with news, scores and information about the University of Memphis Softball team.
